World football governing body FIFA has selected six African referees to officiate at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

They are: Mehdi Abid Charef (Algeria), Malang Diedhiou (Senegal), Bakary Papa Gassama (The Gambia), Gehad Grisha (Egypt), Janny Sikazwe (Zambia), and Bamlak Tessema Weyesa (Ethiopia).

In total, 16 African officials were picked for the tournament that begins on 14 June, with the other 10 being assistant referees.

The Africans are part of 99 officials selected for the world continent.

In total, the officials were drawn from 46 countries, and will attend a two-week seminar at the Italian Football Association’s base in Coverciano next month.

FIFA also announced that officials who will man the video assistant referees (VAR) technology will be drawn from the 99.

This will be the first World cup in which the technology is used. World Cup 2014 was the first in which goal line technology was used.

Europe will be represented by referees from Germany, Turkey, Russia, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Serbia, Italy, Slovenia and France.

Asia will have six as will north and South America and two from Oceania.

Worth noting, for the first time in 80 years, there will be no British referees officiating at the World Cup.
