Zambia, officially known as the Republic of Zambia, is a country located in south central Africa. It is bordered by DR Congo and Tanzania to its north; Malawi to its east; Mozambique to its northeast; Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to its south; and Angola to its west.
During colonial times, Zambia was British territory. It attained independence on 24 October, 1964. Its capital and largest city is Lusaka.
Demographically, the country has a population of 15,972,001. Zambia is highly diversified ethnically, with several groups residing in the country. The most dominant ethnic group however is the Bemba, accounting for about 21% of the population.
Over 70 languages are spoken in Zambia, however, English is the official language. Bemba, Lozi, Nyanja, Tonga, and many others are also widely spoken.
Religiously, Zambia is predominantly Christian. Protestants and Catholics account for 75.3% and 20.2% of the population respectively. Other religions account for 2.7% of the population.
Economically, Zambia is a lower middle income economy. Its GDP stood at $25.5 billion in 2017, with per capita income around $1,342. Its economy is however highly reliant on commodities export for growth and has been vulnerable to price swings.
Politically, Zambia is one of Africa’s most stable countries. So far, it has managed to enjoy peace without facing periods of wars or upheavals. It practices the presidential system of government. The president is both the head of state and head of government.
