Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa is embarking on a state visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The two leaders are expected to hold bilateral talks and sign a raft of cooperation agreements.

The trip is just the second that Mnangagwa’s is taking outside Africa since he took office in November 2017.

While in Beijing, he is also expected to meet Chinese premier Li Keqian, together with the Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, Li Zhanshu.

The trip is will be an emotional one for the Zimbabwean leader, who received military training in China during the liberation war.

China was the first foreign country to send an envoy after Mnangagwa’s ascendancy and is expected to help him steer his country out of years of economic decline.

According to the Special Advisor to the President Chris Mutsvangwa, Mnangagwa will make it clear to China that its people are welcome to his country and that their investments will be secure.

“We have gone beyond the stage where we need guarantees between the two governments. We are taking it to the level where we simply provide the conditions for Chinese enterprise to feel wanted in Zimbabwe… that’s precisely the message President Mnangagwa is taking to China. To make sure that the Chinese are aware that when they come to Zimbabwe they will invest and they will get reward for their capital,” Mutsvangwa said.
