Schoeman came out of the swim leg third but lost a few places during the transition to the cycling leg.

The South African maintained a top five position throughout the second leg, but dropped back into the chasing pack on the first lap of the running leg.

He however kept his composure and fought his way back into contention before surging away on the second and final lap of the run to claim the gold medal ahead of Australian Jacob Birtwhistle. Scotland’s Marc Austin claimed the bronze.

Following his win, Henri used Twitter to express his gratitude to all fans that cheered him on.

The medal win means team South Africa are tied on seventh in the standings after the first day of activity.

England tops the table so far with six gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals.
